DIY Gift Packaging

Hello again! I've recently been entranced by creating fun packaging for gifts. I think I was inspired partially by all of the sweet packaging on Hello Sandwich (a really cute blog you should check out). I had a lot of neon pom poms around (I bought neon yarn and pom pom makers from JoAnn Fabrics and, well, they sort of multiplied exponentially...), so I thought they'd make adorable, festive accents for gifts. I also love the idea of using them with traditional wrapping paper in lieu of bows.

One of my favorite looks for holiday wrapping is simple kraft paper (here I used paper grocery bags turned inside out), stamped in gold ink (my favorite is the "Delicata" gold ink pad by Tsukineko) with hand-carved stamps, all tied up with red and white baker's twine. I hand carve stamps using linoleum cutters (I love Speedball Speedy Carve lino blocks). Geometric shapes are my favorite and they are very simple to make!

A modern take on wedding giftwrap: white drawing paper (from IKEA's children's section) plus neon office labels (from any office store). (I got the idea of using labels as polka dots from Paper Source. Of course, I had to find neon ones.) Then, I tacked on more baker's twine and one of my mini embroidery hoop designs as a sort of gift tag.

A simpler version, sans neon office labels but with a hand-stamped kraft label addition:

Cheers! Colleen

I visited one of my favorite stores in Seattle over the weekend. Pirkko specializes in Finnish design and is located at the Pike Place Market. Of course they carry a lot of Marimekko. It's a delightful place to browse fabric by the yard, home decor, and apparel. They even have a bin of fabric remainders for the sewing enthusiasts among us. I picked up the free Autumn Marimekko newsletter and a few cute Marimekko items too: a pillow cover, tote, and potholder.
